UNDERSTANDING MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program based on the practice of mindfulness. The key to mindfulness is moment to moment nonjudgmental awareness that allows you to respond with greater clarity, calmness and understanding to life’s challenges, rather than reacting in unhealthy ways out of habit or fear. Mindfulness also helps us to be present for the beauty and joy that are also a part of our lives. This well-respected program was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Since its inception in 1979, over 30,000 people have completed the program.

Significant research has been done on the effectiveness of MBSR. It has shown the benefits of mindfulness meditation skills in a variety of conditions:

  • Chronic pain
  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Psoriasis
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Job stress
  • Personal/family stress
